I spent 32 years of my adult life working for a public sector labor union in California. Sometime around 1995 I noticed I was actually a classical liberal Christian instead of a liberal Progressive. As such, I considered it a duty to give my best to my employer, because doing any less would, frankly, be immoral. Sabotage and division, part and parcel of living the big-city activist way, was out of the question for me.

Perhaps I should have found another job, but that’s ancient history now and in some ways I’m glad I didn’t. All those years of co-existing with grass-roots community activists gave me a perspective that might be hard to find anywhere else.

"I bow not yet before the Iron Crown, nor cast my own small golden sceptre down," wrote J.R.R. Tolkien in Mythopoeia. Nor do I, so like everyone else here on Substack, I'm lugging my own modern 95 theses to the top of the Cliffs of Insanity.
