New Confederacy Complains about Unfair Share of Taxes
Gov. Newsom says his state pays more in federal taxes than it receives in federal benefits. That's what John Calhoun complained about in 1837.
A quick follow-up on yesterday’s post about L.A. Mayor Karen Bass and the Sanctuary State Confederacy. California Gov. Gavin Newsom is getting in on the Confederate action by literally making the same argument against the federal government that John C. Calhoun made in 1837.
California pays more in federal taxes than it receives in federal benefits.
Newsom: “We pay over $80 BILLION more in taxes than we get back. Maybe it’s time to cut that off.”
Calhoun: “we acknowledge that we are less wealthy than the Northern section of this Union, but I trace this mainly to the fiscal action of this Government, which has extracted much from, and spent little among us.”
For clarity, Calhoun was the insurrectionist Senator from South Carolina who spoke at length on the Senate Floor in the defense of slavery, while Newsom is a state governor who tweets his suggestions for secession.
California in 2025 is much wealthier than South Carolina was in 1837, but I remember when Democrats said paying more taxes was patriotic. So how patriotic is California if its leaders resent paying their “fair share” and ignorantly repeat racist Confederate talking points from the 1830s?
Back then, Democrats passed laws ordering the return of fugitive slaves to their masters. Today, Democrat cities can’t function without a low-wage underclass of brown people, and their leaders think paying illegal immigrants to hide from the law is some kind of Underground Railroad.
Who's going to mow the damn grass if they deport them all? Oh wait, I remember a time when teenagers with push mowers and gas cans made extra cash mowing lawns. 🤔
Right on, Gavin! Re-invent yourself as a tax-cutting, government slashing, MAGA supporting Republican! You may have to throw out the hair gel though...
